PE 1000 is a variant of polyethylene (PE) or Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), with an excellent reputation as a technical plastic for use in numerous applications.
The term technical plastic refers to plastic materials that are perfectly suited to a particular application thanks to their characteristics. Certain technical plastics have been chemically modified in order to achieve the desired characteristics, so that the product is not only suitable for its specific application but is also simple to process. An excellent example of technical plastic is PE 1000, or Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE).
A number of different variants of polyethylene (PE) are available, of which PE 1000 or Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is the most widely used. In addition, PE500 or HMPE is used for a variety of applications such as buffer strips, buffer blocks and guide strips. The most commonly used variant in bearing technology however is PE1000 (UHMWPE). PE1000 is the topflight variant of the series, particularly in terms of its friction coefficient, which is in fact even lower than that of Nylon or POM – making it the perfect material for use in PE 1000 sliding bearings and PE 1000 sliding plates.
Unlike Peek or for example our Teclite 100 composite bearing material or Teclite 100M bearing material, UHMWPE is not suitable for high-load applications. It only offers extreme wear resistance in lighter applications such as chain or belt guides.
